The Beaches in Chennai
Today, I will be blogging on the picturesque and precarious beaches in Chennai.😃
The eastern coastline in India are caressed by the waters of the Bay of Bengal. With a length of 13 km along with a promenade of 6 km, the "Marina beach" in Chennai is the longest beach in Asia. Personally, the Marina Beach is one of my favourite beaches because of the deep blue sea and the silky sands that it possesses.
My favourite beach in Chennai is the "Elliot's Beach" also known as the "Besant Nagar Beach". I like the beach because it is very tranquil and lesser polluted. The waves are comparatively gentle as well.
Another beach in Chennai is "Kovalam beach (Covelong)" down south of the Marina beach. I am fortunate to be able to view this beach through the window in my room. The unique feature of this beach with its curved shape, balanced flow of waves make it one of the best surfing spots in India. Every year, surfers from all around the world gather here to participate in the surfing festival. Last year, I had been to watch the festival at Kovalam. Over there, I saw one of the greatest fielders from South Africa, Jonty Rhodes who loves surfing and is a regular participant in the festival.
Chennai beaches are famous for breeding of Turtles. Last year, I had participated in an initiative called "The Turtle Walk". A group of my friends along with their parents walked along the Neelankarai Beach to unearth the eggs of the Olive Ridley Turtles. During the nesting time, the turtles come to the beach and lay their eggs. When the eggs hatch, the hatchlings are attracted to the street lights. Instead of going into the sea, they go to the street and get killed by cars or bikes on the road.
During the turtle walk, the experts dig up the eggs and nurture them till the eggs hatch. Once the hatchlings are strong enough to be on their own, they are let into the sea. We had walked for around four kilometres and found close to fifty eggs in a spot under the sand. This was a wonderful experience for me to learn about the turtles, preserving our environment for other living beings and co-exist in a mutually beneficial way. I came across an amazing fact as told by our guide during the walk: a turtle lays it's eggs in the same spot it was born. Wow! 😲😎
Though the beaches in Chennai are among the finest in India, they are very dangerous during the high tides. There have been causalities as the high tides cause the sea to roar in anger. As human beings, we do not keep our beaches clean. The amount of littering we do at the beaches is outrageous. Instead of throwing the litter in garbage cans or carrying it back home, it is thrown all over the beach side and into the sea! This callous attitude from us is making the environment worse day by day. Fortunately, there are organizations who work to clean beaches and lakes such as the Environmentalist Foundation of India( EFI ) headed by Mr. Arun Krishnamurthy.
Overall, the beaches in Chennai are fantabulous. If you are planning to travel to Chennai, please do check out these beaches. I am sure it would be a great experience.😃
