Goal!- FIFA World Cup Part 1

As the FIFA World Cup 2018 held in Russia, has recently concluded, I will be blogging on my observations and some memorable moments for me in this World cup. This is part one of two blogs.

Preceding the World Cup, there were shows on the Television featuring cities in Russia as well as the stadiums over there. In one such program, I learnt a lot about a picturesque city named "Kaliningrad". The city has some wonderful buildings and the layout is a treat for the eyes. It is host to the Kaliningrad Stadium which has a capacity to hold over 35,000 people. With this hype, I was eagerly looking forward to the upcoming World Cup.

Before the tournament started, I decided to support three teams; France, Portugal, and England. I am supporting France because I like their playing style as well as few members in the squad including Olivier Giroud and Antoinne Greizmann. I am supporting Portugal because I am a huge Cristiano Ronaldo Fan !πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜Ž England has many players whom I like including Jesse Lingard and Raheem Sterling.

The much awaited FIFA World Cup commenced with the opening cermony. It included the retired Brazilian star Ronaldo inaugrating the football used in the tournament, the Adidas Telstar 18.

The opening match saw the home nation Russia thrashing Saudi Arabia 5-0. As I sat in shock, little did I know how far they would go in the tournament. Gradually from thirty two teams, it came down to sixteen. My joy knew no bounds as the three teams which I had supported had progressed to the round of sixteen. Among the teams who exited the tournament was defending champion Germany!!. They lost to Mexico as well as South Korea. This is known as the defending champion's curse as the past three World Cup winners had lost in the first round in the next Cup.

A classic match in the first round for me was the match between Spain and Portugal. A highly entertaining game, the final score was 3-3 with Ronaldo scoring a hat-trick. This is his 51st hat-trick for Portugal!😎. Among his goals was a masterpiece which will remain eternal through the ages. With Spain 3-2 up, Ronaldo got a freekick few yards away from the penalty box. He made the ball curve in the air so much, that it curved over the defenders; the goalkeeper could only stand helplessly as the ball hit the top corner of the net.

I would definately recommend you to watch the games in the first round of FIFA especially the Spain versus Portugal match. I am sure you are in for a treat.
