Gabbar Singh, here we come!!
In this blog, I will be writing on a classic hindi movie which is also one of my favourites, Sholay.
Released in 1975, the movie is directed by Ramesh Sippy. The main story arc concerns two friends, Veeru(Dharmendra) and Jai(Amitabh Bachchan) who are thieves. They are hired by Thakur Baldev Singh(Sanjeev Kumar) to capture the notorious dacoit Gabbar Singh(Amjad Khan), who was creating havoc in the village of Ramgadh.
Few reasons which made me watch this movie more than three times include the location in which the movie was shot in was apt for the story. With a rocky and dry terrain, it is the perfect place for a dacoit hideout as well as hot pursuits on horses. The screenplay done in this movie is amazing. As each scene compliments each other, the suspense builds up. At one point, when Thakur Baldev Singh removes his shawl and shows that his hands have been chopped off by Gabbar Singh; I literally jumped up in consternation and stared at the computer screen, gawking!
The movie was doubly enhanced by the sublime music of the great R D Burman as well as the lyrics from Anand Bakshi. The movie has evergreen songs including "Mehbooba Mehbooba", "Holi Ke Din" and the song which later became the anthem of friendship, " Ye Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge".
The reason why this movie is a classic is because it has all the elements a good movie should have including action, comedy, revenge and romance. In fact, the movie has got some humorous jokes and very amusing scenes which are a treat to watch. There are iconic dialogues in the movie as well.
A character who is eternal for ages in this movie is Gabbar Singh, the iconic villan. The description of a dacoit in stories and cartoons nowadays, are based on him. Played by Amjad Khan, Gabbar Singh along with his gang of dacoits loot and terrorize the villagers living in the villages nearby of food and money. Amjad Khan has played his role very well. The way how he carries himself throught the movie as well as his dialogue delivery is amazing.
I would strongly recommend you to watch this movie as I am sure you will be blown away!!😃
I would like to end this blog with a quote from Gabbar Singh:
This translates to: Only one man can save you from Gabbar's fury, Gabbar himself !!!
P.S: He is talking about himself in the third person.
