Lagaan - Once upon a time in India
In this blog, I am going to be writing about one of my favourite hindi movies, "Lagaan".
Released in 2001, the movie is directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The main story arc concerns Bhuvan(Aamir Khan) a farmer who lived during the British Raj. He accepts Captain Andrew Russell's(Paul Blackthorne) challenge to beat his team in a game of cricket and enable his village to not pay the high taxes imposed on them for the next three years.
Few reasons why I like this movie are:
1. It is very gripping - The movie has a very nailbiting plot and always made me sit on the edge of my seat while watching it.
2. Underdog to champion story - I really liked the movie because it potrayed the villagers, who didn't even know what was cricket to beat the experienced Englishmen.
3. Amazing Setting - Shot in a village in Gujarat, Gowariker has used the apt setting for the movie as it potrays a dry and hot village.
4. Sublime Acting - All the characters have acted really well. Even the supporting characters have acted nicely making Lagaan a complete movie.
5. Magnificent Songs - With the music direction done by A.R Rahman and the lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar, every song in this movie is awesome!! It is also enhanced by the singing of singers like Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik to name a few.
The movie was also enhanced by Ashutosh Gowariker's awesome direction. The scene transition and order is very smooth. He has used awesome shots especially during the cricket match to make the movie better.
My favourite character is Bhuvan. Played by my favourite actor, Aamir Khan, Bhuvan is very focused and patriotic as he brought his team together to stand up and fight against the British. Aamir Khan once again acted really well as he literally transformed into his character!!
In conclusion, I strongly recommend you to watch Lagaan as I am sure you will enjoy it and find it interesting.
I loved this movie. The struggle for survival, fight for one's own rights through a game of cricket was awesome. Hats of to the entire crew, especially to the director for pulling it off with grace.
