My mind-boggling visit to the Kanakakunnu Palace
In this blog, I am going to be writing on my experiences in my visit to Kanakakunnu Palace in Thiruvanathapuram. Yesterday, my aunt and I set out to visit the Vasantholsavam festival, also known as the Kerala Flower Show. This initiative is led by the Kerala Government and is taking place in the Kanakakunnu Palace.
Kanakakunnu is a hill situated in the heart of Thiruvanathapuram (Trivandrum). Atop the hill, there is a palace. It is said to have been build by Sree Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma at the start of the 19th Century. The palace had been used to entertain guests to the Travancore royal family. Kanakakunnu plays host to the annual Vasantholsavam and the week long All India Dance Festival; where Classical dance exponents from all around India come to display their skills.
Few years back, my father and I had visited the Kanakakunnu Palace. At that time there was precious little to see. The hill is a small one and it was barren with grass covering Mother Earth's face.We saw the ancient palace. The view on top was spectacular and we slowly made our way down. But when I visited yesterday, I was blown away!!
There was a lot of crowd and I was distinctly reminded of Tirupati. As we started walking towards the top, I could not help but accede to the plead of my eyes looking at the picturesque and stunning flowers filling up the hill. Midway, there is a wall with water flowing down like a mini waterfall. I could not believe my eyes. Kanakakunnu had changed like how a bud changes into a lotus.
We finally reached the top of Kanakakunnu Hill. Over there there were lot of animals and plants. In a mini island on a small pool, there were beautiful white pigeons pecking grain along with few small and cute Guinea Pigs which were quite similar to hamsters. Adding to the beauty, there were small fishes swimming in the pool. As we continued walking, we glimpsed a mini forest. To make it realistic, animal sounds were being played in the background. Then, we started our descent.
Kanakakunnu is host to two auditoriums, Nishagandhi and Sooryakanthi. We were heading for the Nishagandhi auditorium when we heard the news that the All India Dance Festival, which is usually held in Nishagandhi, luckily, was starting on that day. The highlight of our Nishagandhi visit was that we saw Kerala's Governer P.Sadashivam, who was the Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony.
The Sooryakanthi auditorium was kept for displays and shops. At the beginning of the display section, there were different types of weeds and aqua plants. Moving further, there was a nursery with all the different types of flowers you can dream of. The shop sector was very crowded with shops selling items from Pot holders to North Indian chaat.
After an amazing evening at Kanakakunnu, we returned home.
While on the return journey, I could not help but gaze on the Kanakakunnu hill and the magnificent palace atop it. Kanakakunnu means Golden Hill in Malayalam; and in the dark background with the splendid evening lights, it really does live up to its nameš
Thanks for the life in the writing. I could visualize of being physically present on the Kanakakunnu hill. Definitely, Kanakakunnu is a pride of Thiruvananthapuram.
