281 and Beyond, an amazing read!!

In this blog, I am going to be writing on one of my favourite autobiographies, 281 and Beyond.

This book is the autobiography of one of India's best test players ever, VVS Laxman. One of the foremost Indian cricketers during the 2000's along with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, he has often lifted India from the jaws of defeat into the lap of victory. His most memorable and cherished innings was the 281 against Australia in Calcutta. This eventually led to a series win against Australia after a long time. His career stretched from 1997 to 2012.

I had first read about this book in The Hindu newspaper. There were one or two reviews and an interview with Laxman as well. The reviews were positive and were saying that this book was good. As I had not read much about Laxman, I thought that I would find this book interesting and wanted to buy it but as I was busy in other activities, it slipped out of my mind.

A week ago, I was in Thiruvananthapuram. I was in a bookstore browsing for some books, when the face of VVS Laxman staring out of the shelves hit me like a wave. Happy on seeing the book, I immediately bought it.

'281 and Beyond' is co-authored by Cricket author R.Kaushik. The book chronicles Laxman's journey from being an amateur to an ace; his big decision whether to choose cricket or medicine; His ups and lows and of course, his classy 281. It talks about Laxman's struggle to stay in the Indian Cricket Team during his early days; and how consistancy as well as timely knocks led him to cement his place in the team. Laxman has devoted one chapter to his personal life as well. The transition of events are very smooth and it is a pleasure to read the book.

A point which he has repeatedly emphasised on in the book is that he felt he had a very good career with little to no regrets. Personally, I  think that he was content with his life and I feel that this is the mark of a great person!!๐Ÿ˜Ž

In conclusion, 281 and Beyond is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I strongly recommend this book to you as I believe that you will love it ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  1. Good writing Kanna๐Ÿ˜..
Laxman’s batting was my favorite too. And this 281, I remember watching it live and it was exhilarating and some of his shot making was unbelievable. Stepping out to Warne who was bowling into the rough outside his legstump and then gloriously driving him through the extracover was a sight to behold.
I still have the recording of this innings with me.
Great selection by you to read about him and his life and career.

By the way, Kannaa ‘shashi tharoorinu’ padikkuva??๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ
