Goal, Butterfingers !
In this blog, I will be writing on one of my favourite books ever : Goal, Butterfingers! This book was published in 2010.
Written superbly by Khyrunnisa A, the book is centered around thirteen year old Amar Kishen, who studies in Green Park Higher Secondary School. Amar is a very clumsy person, who tends to mostly drop whatever he holds, hence leading his friends to call him as butterfingers. In the wake of the 2010 FIFA World cup, Amar and his friends have a brilliant plan - a school "World Cup" tournament, where each class plays as a different country. But while being executed, they run into many obstacles, including a semi finals match ban for skipping school and taking part in a protest rally against pesticide factories.
After having to send a weak team to play the semifinals, they fear for the worst, when they get the news that the team had won the semi-finals!! Just before the finals, the team's goalkeeper got his hand injured. As there was no reserve goal-keeper, Amar volunteered to be the goal-keeper for the finals. His friends were aghast as they thought that instead of saving the ball, Amar would drop it thus giving the opposition a chance to score. On the finals, Amar employed a technique of jumping over the ball and saving it, thus leading his team to win the world cup.
The main reason I love Goal, Butterfingers is because it is about a schoolboy's exploits and adventures and has a school setting. This made it very relatable for me and I really felt like joining Amar and his friends in all their escapades!!
Few other reasons that makes this book so awesome is that :
1. It is filled with rib-tickling humour - Humour is what made me enjoy "Butterfinger's" adventures. There were jokes for which I ended up rolling on the floor laughing!! Writing stories with a lot of humour is quite a difficult task, and I admire author Khyrunnisa for her ability to insert the amusement at any given point of the story.
2. It has thrilling mystery - Mystery is what makes Goal, Butterfingers a superb book. A new pesticide factory was about to open in their town and the boys suspect their new English teacher who is very hostile, to be the mastermind of the opening of the pesticide factory. But, in a superb change of events, they find out that their English teacher is an environmentalist and was trying to stop the pesticide factory whereas the villain was the tenant living next door to the school; the villain was portrayed as a very innocent character earlier in the book. I was blown away by the ending and devoured and reread the book more than three times.
My favourite character is Kishore, who is one of Amar's close friends. Kishore, who is a expert in English grammar, also knows Latin. The book is full of his Latin phrases which are both amusing and interesting.
In conclusion, Goal, Butterfingers! is like a 'all-you-can-eat' buffet of enjoyment and I am sure you will love it😃
