KER - Part 3

In this post, I will be blogging on the first two days of the KER week.

 Day 1
We were given a fantastic welcome by the teachers as they formed a bridge by standing in two adjacent long rows and linking their hands together. We ran under the 'bridge' which led to our classroom and entered the classroom. Incidentally, I was the first one to enter the classroom hence, I was on cloud 9. We then met Shaheen Mistry, the founder of Teach For India. She explained to us what KER is all about and its goals. I was amazed by the passion and confidence with which she spoke.

Then, we formed groups of ten students each. Each group along with two teachers, sat  separately in a circle. In the group, each person had to speak about a personal experience that had an effect on their life. This was an activity to get to know about each other and become friends. Personally, it was nice to know about each person's life experience and how their thought process worked. I narrated my sandwich business story and everybody appreciated my work

Later in the day, we met few founders of different NGO'S(non governmental organization). It was interesting to know their life story, and on their desire to create an impact socially led them to form these NGO's which strives to solve various issues. The day ended on a high note as it was my birthday!! I was elated when hundred kids and twenty odd teachers sang for me. It was a very special birthday for me.

Day 2

Day 2 was very interesting. We started with some fun warming up activities. Then, we boarded a bus and travelled to a nearby locality. In pairs, we had to go and conduct a survey for the locals by asking them if they had studied or are their children studying. If not, then why didn't they do so.

Myself and an other student went about asking the locals about topics such as how their education went. While few people said that themselves as well as their kids studied well, most people said that due to their financial situation and lack of facilities for the school, they could not complete their education. But they stressed that education was very important and now they work hard for their children to get a good schooling. This gave me a deep understanding on why learning and gaining knowledge is so important. When we came back to our classroom, all the pairs brainstormed on how to solve these problems. When the teacher assigned to our group saw my partner and my work, he was impressed and told us to keep it up.

In the next blog, I will be blogging on days three and four of the KER week😃
