IoT - The Future of Technology

As technology is poised to dominate our lives even more in the coming years, two main focus areas for the future are AI(Artificial Intelligence) and IoT. In this blog, I will be covering the basics of IoT.

What is IoT?

IoT stands for the Internet of Things. The word 'Internet' refers to the interconnected computer systems. Similarly, the Internet of Things means interconnecting everyday objects with embedded computing devices. This will allow these everyday objects to be able to 'talk' to each other. This means that they will be able to send and receive data to each other.

How does it work?

In order to connect each object, it has to be given a unique identity. A computing circuit and a sensor has to be embedded onto it in order for it to be able to communicate with other objects As there are a wide range of sensors for various purposes, the developer has to choose a sensor which is suited for that specific purpose. Then, all the data which has been produced by the object will be stored on a cloud platform. This makes accessing and retrieving data a very easy process.

How can IoT be used?

In this section, I will give 3 examples covering different industries and will elucidate how IoT can be used over there.

1. Healthcare:

IoT can be used to track a patient's health and can give warnings before an emergency occurs. For example, if a person is a heart patient, a computer situated in a remote hospital can monitor his/her health daily. Moreover, if the patient is in grave danger of getting a heart attack, the person's fitness watch can give a warning even months before the occurrence! The watch also sends an alarm to the hospital so that the doctors can get ready to treat the patient.

2. Consumer:

IoT can be used for day to day consumer use. In fact, a growing proportion of IoT devices are used for consumer purposes. To give an example, if a person leaves the house at 9:00 A.M and gets into his/her car at 9:05, the IoT devices learn from this pattern and can predict that the person is going to follow the exact routine in the future. Thereby, both the house door and the garage door which have computing devices embedded in them, self-open sharply at 9:00 and 9:05 respectively! This feature makes our daily lives a lot more easier.

3. Gaming:

IoT is poised to be one of the features which will greatly enhance the gaming industry. Through IoT, the game environment and its characters can seamlessly integrate with the real world environment. This has already been implemented in games such as Pokemon Go but the possibilities for the future are endless. One example is enriching a person's gaming experience by implementing MR(Mixed Reality) without the use of lenses.

Risks of IoT

The main risk of IoT is safeguarding our privacy. Since all the objects store our data on a cloud platform, it is very easy for hackers to obtain our information especially if it is on a public cloud. Furthermore, developers have to make sure they are using strong cryptographic systems in order to securely encrypt the communication between devices.

My Opinion on IoT

Personally, I feel that even with its cons in regard to security, the Internet of Things will be a feature that will transform the world. I believe so because not only will it contribute to the growth of many sectors, but it will also make all our lives much easier😀
