KER - Part 1
Towards the end of January in 2018, my school gave students from grade 6 to 9, a chance to participate in an initiative called KER. KER, which is the short form for Kids Educational Revolution, is the brain child of Shaheen Mistry. Shaheen Mistry is the founder of Teach For India(TFI), an organization which strives to eliminate educational inequality in India.
Teach for India, which works in seven cities across India, recruits college graduates and working professionals to serve as full time teachers for two years. These highly qualified teachers are placed in low income schools, which do not have the funds to provide the study material to the children. The teachers use their own money for the betterment of the school and use their ingenuine and fun methods to teach the children.
Kids Education Revolution is a very unique initiative where 100 kids selected across the country come together to come up with new teaching methods. This was the first time that students decided what they wanted to learn
In order to get selected, I had to write about an incident in which I made a huge impact socially. I thought that this opportunity couldn't have come at a better time as I had just finished my Militvaa challenge. In order to be sure of getting selected, I wrote a lengthy write-up along with very valuable inputs from my mother and father. I wrote three drafts and then published the superbly edited write up. To add the icing to the cake, there was an option to post a video of yourself explaining your social work. As I already had a YouTube channel, I posted the video quickly. A week later, the news came in : I got selected as one of the hundred in India to attend KER!! It was going to be held in Mumbai over the course of one week. I was super excited and could not wait to fly to Mumbai.
Make sure you read my next post to know about how I felt about Mumbai as a city and the commencing of KER😃
