The Militvaa Challenge - Part 2

Image
In my previous post, I wrote on what the Militvaa Challenge was about and my idea on selling sandwiches. In this blog, I will be writing on my sandwich business. I decided to make the Tomato and Cucumber sandwich and the Corn and Mayonnaise sandwich. I chose them because they are my personal favourites. The cost of preparing each sandwich was rupees thirty. In order to get a healthy profit of rupees thirty with each sandwich, I sold them at rupees sixty. As my apartment complex is quite big and many people live there, I could sell many sandwiches. I went door to door taking orders. I first told the customer what the Militvaa challenge was and its good cause. I then took the order, went home and made the sandwiches. It usually took me fifteen to twenty minutes to prepare the sandwiches for the order, which would usually consist of two Tomato and Cucumber sandwiches and two Corn and mayonnaise sandwiches. After packing the sandwiches, I went to the customer's house an...

The Militvaa Challenge - Part 1

Image
One and a half years back, my school (HLC International) collaborated with the Ink Link Charitable Trust  to come up with a stupendous social initiative. Ink Link Charitable Trust is run by Mr. Kaustav and Lily Aunty who are both pioneers in the field of Fashion Technology. The Ink Link Charitable Trust helps the underprivileged children of Kannagi Nagar, which is a socially and economically backward area in Chennai. Through the money collected, the trust helps in buying children their school books, stationary and other useful items. As Kannagi Nagar faces problems daily, they try to solve a few problems in the neighborhood and even come to teach English to the children as well!! The initiative was called the ' Militvaa Challenge '. Each student(there were thirty) received a capital of 500  rupees . We were also provided with an income and balance sheet. The idea was that we should use the capital amount to start any business we want. We ran our business from the...

Captain Marvel

Image
Last week, I had watched Marvel Cinematic Universe's(MCU) latest movie, Captain Marvel . It is Marvel Studio's first female superhero led film; Captain Marvel is touted to be one of the prominent characters in Avengers: Endgame , the sequel of Avengers Infinity War . Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the main story arc is set in the 1990's and concerns  Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), a U.S air force pilot who becomes a Kree, an extraterrestrial species, after absorbing the power of the Tesserect. She is part of an intergalactic war with the Skrulls(another alien species), when she finds out that she is fighting for the wrong side. Along with the help of   Nick Fury (Samuel.L.Jackson) and her best friend Maria Rambeau(Lashana Lynch), she defeats the Kree and helps the Skrull find a new home. At the end of the movie, Captain Marvel gives Nick Fury a pager(a contact device) which can be used to contact her for emergencies. It is this pager that Nick Fury uses twenty...

Black Panther

Image
In the wake of the recent 91st Academy Awards, I will be blogging on one of Marvel Studio's biggest blockbuster movies, Black Panther . The movie won three  Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score and for the Best Production Design. Released in 2018, the movie was directed by Ryan Coogler. The main story arc deals with how a young king named T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), who is a super hero named Black Panther , is all set to rule his kingdom after his father's death; when a relative defeats him in a contest and becomes the new king. In the end, after an epic fight, Black Panther wins and regains his position as the King. I was absolutely mesmerized while watching the movie in the theatre with the big screen and booming audio. Here are few reasons why I love this movie: 1. The cinematography - The movie has some amazing camera work and awesome scenes. From close-ups to aerial shots, the scenes have it all. The transition of the scenes are very smooth a...

281 and Beyond, an amazing read!!

Image
In this blog, I am going to be writing on one of my favourite autobiographies, 281 and Beyond .  This book is the autobiography of one of India's best test players ever, VVS Laxman . One of the foremost Indian cricketers during the 2000's along with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, he has often lifted India from the jaws of defeat into the lap of victory. His most memorable and cherished innings was the 281 against Australia in Calcutta. This eventually led to a series win against Australia after a long time. His career stretched from 1997 to 2012. I had first read about this book in The Hindu newspaper. There were one or two reviews and an interview with Laxman as well. The reviews were positive and were saying that this book was good. As I had not read much about Laxman, I thought that I would find this book interesting and wanted to buy it but as I was busy in other activities, it slipped out of my mind. A week ago, I was in Thiruvananthapuram. I was...

My mind-boggling visit to the Kanakakunnu Palace

Image
In this blog, I am going to be writing on my experiences in my visit  to Kanakakunnu Palace in Thiruvanathapuram. Yesterday, my aunt and I set out to visit the Vasantholsavam festival , also  known as the Kerala Flower Show. This initiative is led by the Kerala Government and is taking  place in the Kanakakunnu Palace.  Kanakakunnu is a hill situated in the heart of Thiruvanathapuram (Trivandrum). Atop the hill, there is a palace. It is said to have been build by Sree Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma at the start of the 19th Century. The palace had been used to entertain guests to the Travancore royal family. Kanakakunnu plays host to the annual Vasantholsavam and the week long All India Dance Festival; where Classical dance exponents from all around India come to display their skills. Few years back, my father and I had visited the Kanakakunnu Palace. At that time there was precious little to see. The hill is a small one and it was barren with grass coveri...

My insightful takeaways from the 2018-2019 annual exhibition - Part 3

Image
In the third part of my trio blog set on my annual exhibition, I am going to be writing on my experience with basketry and bags as well as the annual exhibition itself. On Day 5, I commenced my first lengthy project. I had to make a pouch . This was my favourite project as it was a blend of both weaving and basketry. To make the basic structure of the pouch, I had to weave but to build the three-dimensional shape, I made the cardboard loom such that I had to weave on both sides of the cardboard. Using a mind boggling pattern of colours, I slowly and steadily worked my way through this project. As it was forming to be a big and thick pouch, I could not finish it in school and hence had to take it home. On Day 6, I brought my now finished and fabulously looking pouch to school. To give it a finishing touch, I quickly finger weaved a handle for my pouch and attached it. This was one of my proudest moments as I had toiled for six hours to finally see it finished😌😎 Later that ...
